Congenital Dysplasia and Dislocation of the Hip in Children and Adults

Abstract

If congenital dysplasia of the hip is to be excluded, it is necessary to answer a series of questions that were already touched upon in Chap. 5:

  1. 1.

    Does the patient have a family history of hip dysplasia or early osteoarthritis of the hip?

  2. 2.

    Is the patient firstborn?

  3. 3.

    Was there a breech delivery? Was version performed?

  4. 4.

    Was there evidence of oligohydramnios or a cramped intrauterine position? Was a cesarean section performed?

  5. 5.

    Was there a disproportion of fetal to maternal size or a small pelvis?

  6. 6.

    Were there other postural abnormalities such as torticollis, pelvic obliquity, clubfeet, pes valgus or talipes calcaneus, dislocation of the knee and joint contractures, either in the patient or the family?

  7. 7.

    Are there differences in the range of motion of the legs? Did fetal kicking movements abate toward the end of pregnancy?
