Congenital Dysplasia and Dislocation of the Hip in Children and Adults

Abstract

A great many studies over the years have dealt with therapeutic results in congenital dislocation of the hip. As time passed, increasing demands were placed on treatment outcomes. Lindemann (1950) described this development in a 1949 lecture on the concept of “recovery” in congenital hip dislocation and the evaluation of results, and he proposed an evaluation scheme that assessed the extent of anatomic recovery based largely on radiographic criteria (Table 13.1). In German-speaking countries, there has been an increasing tendency in recent decades to evaluate hip radiographs in strictly quantitative terms, and to supplement this approach with an evaluation of function. Angloamerican studies, by contrast, often limit themselves to determinations of the CE angle of Wiberg (1939) and use of the Severin scale (1941) to make an evaluation.
