Abstract
The literature on the Yellow-legged Gull (Larus cachinnans) is relatively abundant (see Goethe in Glutz & Bauer, 1982). Nevertheless most information refers to the Northern or European coasts of the Mediterranean sea, the North African side being relatively undiscovered (Jacob & Courbet, 1980; Thevenot et al., 1981; Mayaud, 1983). This paper presents and discusses the data obtained at a breeding colony of L.c. michahellis, off the Mediterranean Moroccan coast (Chafarinas Islands) during the period of 197 6 to 1985. Some of these data have been preliminary reported elsewhere (de Juana et al., 1979, 1984; Witt et al., 1981; Carrera et al., 1985; Bermejo & Carrera, in press). The information hereby presented could prove of value in establishing the geographical pattern of some biological characteristics of the species as a way to support taxonomical differences, and in facilitating population management in areas where this gull could be posing problems to the survival of other species, as is the case of the Audouin’s Gull (Larus audouinii) in the study area (see Bradley in this same volume).
