Abstract

One reason I accepted the invitation to speak on this subject is to correct misunderstandings about my opinion of Gibbs. Gibbs needs no estimate from me, but I must defend myself against the contempt I should justly suffer, were I to be so deficient in science and taste as to place his achievements at any level but the highest.
