Abstract
Periodic follow-up examinations are an essential part of the total management of the head and neck cancer patient. The following general guidelines are recommended as one acceptable regimen. For the first year following treatment, the patient should be seen and examined every month. During the second year the patient should be seen every two months; the third year, every three or four months; and during the fourth and fifth years, the patient should be seen semi-annually. Because the head and neck cancer patient is in a high risk category for developing a second primary cancer, these patients should continue to have annual complete physical examinations for life, including chest x-rays, clinical pathology laboratory work-ups, and oral/dental examinations.
