Abstract

When feasible, the best management of cancer is to separate all the malignant tumor from the patient by surgical excision. The advantages of surgery are that the treatment is administered promptly and completed in a short interval of time. It permits pathologic definition of the extent of the cancer and accurate evalution of the margins of the excision. Pathologic evaluation is facilitated and enhanced if the surgeon provides a diagrammatic description of the surgical specimen. The disadvantages of surgery are the tissue loss required by emcom- passing all of the tumor during excision, the consequent functional and cosmetic deformities that may ensue, and the usual physiological risks of any surgical procedure.
