Abstract
Late in the sixties the Danish Meteorological Institute was given the task of establishing a storm surge warning service for the southern part of the Danish North Sea coast. For the purpose of forecasting the sea level in storm situations different methods came into consideration, among them the hydrodynamic numeric model (HN model of Hansen (Hansen 1956), which kindly was placed at our disposal by the Institut für Meereskunde der Universität Hamburg. This HN model was developed in the fifties and has since then been investigated and improved for several purposes, among them the calculation of wind induced sea level variations (Sündermann 1966). At the Danish Meteorological Institute the HN model was modified and accommodated for practical use in combination with numerical models of the atmosphere supplying the necessary meteorological input data (Duun-Christensen 1975).
