Abstract
In adults with uremia, complications in the peripheral nerve function — so-called uremic polyneuropathy (PNP) — were found rather frequently (8). The clinical signs of PNP were restless legs, cramps (especially during the night), paresthesia, burning feet, and pain in the extremities. Neurological studies revealed that impaired vibratory perception preceded sensory disturbances, decreased reflexes, muscle weakness, and in the most advanced stages, paresis or palsy. PNP occurs more often in males, but reasons for this are not yet known. The histopathological examination showed axonal degeneration and secondary segmental demyelinization.
