Erst die durch Charnley inaugurierte Technik der Verankerung von Gelenkprothesen mit Knochenzement führte zu dem entscheidenden Durchbruch des alloplastischen Gelenkersatzes, so daß heute der künstliche Hüftgelenkersatz weltweit als Routineoperation durchgeführt wird.
