Abstract
The rationale of nearly all surgical procedures in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease is the reduction of gastric acid secretion. The importance of acid secretion in the development of ulceration can be clearly demonstrated by the fact that after simple gastro-enterostomy all ulcers in the duodenum will heal, since acid is kept away from the ulceration.
