Abstract
Alterations in haematological parameters often resulting in anaemia are among the major clinical complications encountered in patients who have had gastric surgery. The reported incidence of anaemia following partial gastrectomy has ranged from 3% to 63% [1]. Examination of the peripheral blood smear of anaemia patients after gastric surgery may be confusing, because iron-deficiency anaemia and vitamin-deficiency anaemia may coexist [2]. The reported incidence of anaemia depends on how carefully it is looked for. Although not anaemic, many more patients have low serum iron or vitamin B12 levels [3]. The incidence of anaemia increases with time. In one study, anaemia was found to be present in 9% of patients (iron-deficiency anaemia) during the first year after gastrectomy, but later 30% of the patients were found to have anaemia [4].
