Abstract

Surgical treatment of gastroduodenal ulcer disease by resection or simple gastroenterostomy was popular at the beginning of this century. The first carcinoma in the gastric remnant after resection for benign ulcer disease was described in 1922 by Balfour. Up to the 1950s this complication of gastric surgery was rare [1–3]. Thus, K.H. Bauer [4] was able to give a survey of 27 cases in 1951. In the last few decades, however, the number of cases reported in the literature has increased steadily, so that at the moment about 300 cases of carcinoma in the gastric remnant have been described [5–10].
