Zusammenfassung
Mit 1.400 g beträgt die Masse des Gehirns eines erwachsenen Menschen etwa 2% der gesamten Körpermasse. Unter Ruhebedingungen entnimmt es dem Blut ca. 50 ml Sauerstoff (O2)/min und beansprucht somit rund 20% der gesamten O2 Aufnahme des Organismus. Diese Zahlen verdeutlichen bereits, daß das Gehirn, neben Herz, Nieren und Leber, zu den stoffwechselaktivsten Organen des Körpers zählt. Da andererseits seine Kapazität, essentielle Stoffwechselsubstrate bzw. anfallende Metabolite zu speichern sehr bescheiden ist, muß ein kontinuierlicher und intensiver Stoff-austausch mit dem Blut stattfinden können.
