Abstract
The originator of the geotectonic hypothesis of contraction of the globe, Élie de Beaumont, was trying in the middle of the nineteenth century to find a certain regular pattern of trends in the strike of mountain ranges. He suggested that this pattern would correspond to the position of the edges of the polyhedron whose shape the Earth would assume after contraction.
