Abstract
The general tendency towards compensation of subsidence by the accumulation of sediments needs explaining. A first hypothesis that can be put forward is that the Earth’s crust sags beneath the weight of the sediments; where they accumulate more the subsidence is deeper, and where there is less sedimentation the amplitude of the subsidence is smaller.
