Zusammenfassung

Das Wirtschaftssystem ist eine gesellschaftliche Einrichtung, die die Befriedigung vornehmlich der materiellen Bedürfnisse der Gesellschaftsmitglieder sicherstellen soll. Diesen Leistungen auf der einen stehen auf der anderen Seite bestimmte Anstrengungen, Arbeitsaufwendungen gegenüber. Vergleichen wir nun zwei unterschiedliche Systeme, so scheint nichts natürlicher, als ihr Leistungs-Anstrengungs-Verhältnis, d.h. ihre Produktivität oder Effizienz miteinander zu vergleichen. Ebenso selbstverständlich sollten jedoch auch die Einwände sein, die gegen ein derartig naives Vorgehen auf der Hand liegen:

  • Die Bedürfnisse sind in der Regel nicht gleich. Angefangen bei den Bedürfnissen nach gegenwärtigem oder zukünftigem Konsum, über unterschiedliche Präferenzen für Freizeit, bis hin zur Struktur der eigentlichen Konsumausgaben können hier erhebliche Differenzen auftreten.

  • Die aggregierte Bedürfnisbefriedigung einer Gesellschaft sagt wenig aus über die individuelle Bedürfnisbefriedigung, d.h. über die Verteilung der Leistungen und Anstrengungen.

  • Eng damit verbunden ist die Frage nach dem Zustandekommen dieser Verteilung. Die Institutionen eines Wirtschaftssystems dürfen nicht nur instrumentell in Hinblick auf die generelle Bedürfnisbefriedigung betrachtet werden. Sie sind vielmehr auch selbst, zumindest in wesentlichen Aspekten ihrer Eigenschaften, Argumente der Bedürfnisskalen.

  • Die gesellschaftliche Produktion findet nicht raum- und zeitlos statt. Sie ist an die jeweiligen geographischen Gegebenheiten und historischen Entwicklungen gebunden. Und diese unterscheiden sich für verschiedene Gesellschaftssysteme.
