Abstract

If we are to contemplate total hip replacement in adults as young as 45 years of age with the idea of 25 years of trouble-free life ahead, it is necessary to hold definite opinions on the histological nature of the bone-cement interface. With the exception of some published observations of the author(10, 11) the literature so far contains very little histological work which justifies optimism for the late results of total hip replacement, except in the old and decrepit.

This chapter incorporates material presented by the author in the Robert Jones Lecture of the British Orthopaedic Association, September 1976.
