Implantation

Abstract

Implantation in the rabbit and, for comparison, in the cat is used as a model to investigate processes which play a role in the initiation of trophoblast attachment to the uterine mucosa. In combined morphological, histochemical and biochemical experiments evidence is found that certain hydrolytic enzymes and especially proteinases of the blastocyst play an important role here ; this concept was tested by applying specific proteinase inhibitors in vivo and it was shown that inactivation of the described proteinases effectively inhibits implantation.
