Abstract

Adult albino rats (Wistar) of both sexes were anaesthetized with ether and Nembutal and perfused transcardially with a phosphate buffered sulphide solution. 40 pm thick cryostat sections of the frozen brains were all serially mounted on microscope slides and silver impregnated 1 by physical development. A detailed description of the modified Timm’s (1958 a) sulphide silver method was given elsewhere (Haug, 1973). As a rule, three parallel series were formed from each brain. Two of the three series were sulphide silver stained, respectively “lightly” and “darkly”, and one series stained with thionin. Thus, of three consecutive sections two sections were sulphide silver stained and one stained with thionin.
