Occurrence and Role of Different Invertebrate Groups in Alpine Salix herbacea Snowbeds at Hardangervidda

Abstract

On the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, snow covers the ground for more than half of the year (Skartveit et al., 1975). Strong winds during winter blow the hill tops more or less bare of snow which accumulates in crevices and depressions of small slopes where the snow cover may be several meters thick. The snow distribution pattern is rather similar from year to year, and this pattern is reflected in the different plant communities (Dahl, 1975; Lye, 1975). Habitats where snow melts very late, and which have a correspondingly short growth season, are called snowbeds. There is usually a zonation of plant communities from the outer border to the center where snow melts latest or not at all (Gjærevoll, 1956).
