Zusammenfassung
Die Nebenniere nimmt eine zentrale Rolle in der Regulation der metabolischen Prozesse im Körper ein. Aldosteron hilft mit in der Kontrolle des Elektrolytgleichgewichts, Cortisol ist von fundamentaler Bedeutung für Kohlenhydrat- und Proteinumsatz, während die Androgene und Östrogene der Nebennierenrinde für die Genitalentwicklung von gewisser Bedeutung sind. Die Katecholamine, die im Nebennierenmark produziert werden, haben ebenfalls eine gewisse Bedeutung für metabolische Prozesse, nehmen dazuaber noch teil an der Funktion des Herz-Gefäß-Systems. Aldosteron, Glukokortikoide (von denen das wesentlichste beim Menschen das lebenswichtige Cortisol ist), Androgene und Östrogene sind Rindenhormone.
