Abstract
This chapter will deal with problems of the resistance of animals or of selected life processes to extreme temperatures (excluding resistance of growth, development and reproduction), and not with the means by which poikilothermic animals frequently avoid extreme body temperatures. The extensive literature will be considered only as it bears on specific problems(see p. 302 f.,also Smith,1958,1961;Scholander,1959;ParkesandSmith, 1960; Precht, 1963, 1964 d; Ushakov, 1963, 1966; Polyansky and Ushakov, 1965; Meryman, 1966; Asahina, 1962 a, 1965b, 1967, 1969; Glushankova et al., 1967; E.I.F.A.C., 1969; Mazur, 1970).
The following abbreviation will be used: CTM = critical thermal maximum (or minimum); see p. 406f. (see also p. 302).
