Zusammenfassung
Die Mutabilität von DNS, das heißt ihre ungerichtete erbliche Veränderlichkeit, war eine wichtige Voraussetzung zur phylogenetischen Entwicklung der Organismen, denn erst die Existenz von Mutanten ließ z. B. Selektion und Bastardierung zu Evolutionsfaktoren werden. Am Anfang vieler Erkenntnisse der klassischen und molekularen Genetik sowie der Stoffwechselphysiologie stehen Mutanten, die erst durch ihre spezifischen Ausfallerscheinungen Rückschlüsse auf den Wildtyp erlauben.
