Abstract
Varieties of algebraic systems are classes which can be characterized by collections of identities and the theory of varieties is equivalent to the theory of systems of identities. Although identities are the simplest closed logical expressions, the language of identities is still rich enough to express many delicate properties of systems and their classes. It is mainly for this reason that the theory of varieties holds a special place in general algebra.
