Abstract

In the main, this chapter presents a brief survey of classical theoretical results. Beginning with Maxwell’s equations it provides fundamental expressions which relate fields and their potentials to the sources, such as electric and magnetic currents. In the second section electric and magnetic fields induced within horizontally layered Earth are being expanded in a series in spherical (and plane) harmonics. Functions of the response of the layered Earth to an external electromagnetic field, taken in the form of a spherical (plane) harmonic, are described in the third section. The last section outlines the basic mathematical models applied for describing real geoelectric structures.
