Abstract

The present chapter is a brief review covering a vast range of concepts and problems related to the description of the origin of electromagnetic fields used in studies of the Earth’s electrical conductivity. An outline of electromagnetic properties of the atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere is followed by consideration of the origin of the main variations and pulsations, the effect of conductive excitation of the variations due to atmospheric vertical currents is discussed. This chapter is primarily intended to provide the basis for constructing models of electromagnetic field sources employed in deep geoelectrics.
