Abstract

This superorder is extraordinary variable and contains some groups which, in our estimation, are likely to have retained many features from the ancestral monocotyledons. The wide range of variation makes a definition difficult and in an evolutionary sense this unit is undoubtedly paraphyletic rather than monophyletic. Some of its orders, on the other hand, we presume to be monophyletic.
