Abstract

The Danube river (2,857 km) and its catchment area (817,000 km) provide water resources for a population of about 70 millions. Disintegration of Yugoslavia and dissolution of the Soviet Union resulted in an increase in the number of countries in the Danube basin. Recently, there are nine countries having access to the Danube river and six additional countries in the Danube catchment.
