The Adenine Nucleotide Translocator: A Major Autoantigen in Myocarditis and Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Abstract

Current concepts of autoimmunity emphasize the significance of antibodies in the development and maintenance of autoimmune disorders. However, it is difficult to show that a given autoantibody is an essential component of a pathological mechanism which leads to tissue damage and organ dysfunction. Beside contributing to an understanding of the pathogenesis, a precise characterization of the antibodies involved in the autoimmunological process may have diagnostic and prognostic value.
