Zusammenfassung
Erfahrungen und Kenntnisse über psychotrope Pflanzen und Rauschdrogen sind vermutlich so alt wie die Menschheit selbst. Bei der Suche nach Pflanzen für Nahrungs- oder Heilzwecke haben alle Naturvölker meist mittels Versuch und Irrtum die pharmakologischen Eigenschaften der Pflanzen in ihrem Lebensraum erprobt. Etwa 300 000 Pflanzenarten sind bekannt und alle von ihnen produzieren eine breite Palette von niedermolekularen Naturstoffen, sogenannte Sekundärmetabolite. Pflanzen nutzen diese Substanzen zur Abwehr von Pflanzenfressern, Mikroorganismen oder konkurrierenden Pflanzen. Um diese Aufgaben zu erfüllen, müssen diese Naturstoffe mit molekularen Zielstrukturen in betreffenden Organismen interagieren können. Es ist deshalb nicht verwunderlich, daß die meisten Pflanzen Wirkstoffe produzieren, die vielfältige biologische und pharmakologische Aktivitäten aufweisen.
