Zusammenfassung
Bei der Interpersonellen Psychotherapie handelt es sich um ein speziell auf die Behandlung von Depressionen zugeschnittenes Verfahren, das in seiner Orginalform von Klerman u. Weissman (1984) konzipiert wurde. Theoretischer Hintergrund sind Ideen der Interpersonellen Schule, die in den 30er- und 40er-Jahren in den Vereinigten Staaten gegründet wurde. Als bekannteste Vertreter gelten Adolf Meyer (1957) und Harry Stack Sullivan (1957). Meyer betrachtete psychische Störungen als misslungenen Versuch des Individuums, sich an veränderte Umweltbedingungen und insbesondere psychosoziale Stressoren anzupassen. Als Stressfaktoren sind z. B. gestörte zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen oder der Verlust einer wichtigen Bezugsperson durch Trennung oder Tod zu nennen. Sullivan ergänzte und erweiterte den psychobiologische Ansatz Meyers. Er betrachtete die gesamte Psychiatrie als Wissenschaft interpersoneller Beziehungen und trug dazu bei, dass das psychosoziale und interpersonelle Umfeld der Patienten mehr in das Blickfeld des psychiatrischen Interesses gerückt wurde.
