Abstract
Airway obstruction may result in abnormal sounds arising from the respiratory tract. Distinguishing between them is important since they localise the level of airway obstruction. Stertor or snoring is a common finding in children and is a hallmark symptom of obstructive sleep apnoea (REES et al.1998). When severe it may have a profound effect on day-time performance and lead to irreversible pulmonary hypertension. When not associated with craniofacial malformation or neuromuscular diseases it can almost be totally cured by adenotonsillectomy. Stertor is caused by vibrations in the tissues of the nasopharynx, pharynx or soft palate.
