Abstract

SHIVA is a prototype courseware development environment developed within the framework of EEC Delta project. Using both an embedded teaching strategy and a provided conceptual network of the domain, the SHIVA system enables an author to produce an adaptive sequence of multi-media teaching and testing units. This paper describes the SHIVA model and the components of the Microsoft Windows inplementation, and the implied learning, teaching and authoring processes. It then emphasizes the mechanism of the assessment units and their link with the student model and the teaching strategy. It ends with a discussion on the SHIVA characteristics which could contribute to the design of an adaptive testing System.

This paper draws on work carried out for the AAT project (DELTA 1010). The consortium for this project consists of CNRS-IRPEACS (Lyon,France), Open University (Milton Keynes, UK), Apigraph (Lyon,France), SEL (Pforzheim, Germany) and DATAMAT (Rome, Italy).
