Abstract

This chapter offers an overview of what might be called the “infrastructure” for courseware engineering. Courseware engineering can be regarded as an emerging discipline and an emerging set of practices, methods and tools, whose primary goal is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of courseware production. Courseware engineering, broadly defined, can provide a coherent framework for the variety of tools and production methodologies that are described in this book. In focusing on infrastructure, the chapter attempts to provide some analysis of the facilitatory resources needed to ensure the development of courseware engineering. Courseware engineering is at a very early stage. Attempting to define the circumstances that will favor its growth is of strategic importance.
