Abstract
Relatively little information is available regarding the intra-intensive care unit (ICU) patient factors that can determine long-term outcome of the ICU patient. Indeed, ICU physicians are usually happy to see their patient leaving the ICU alive, but there are few data on long-term survival and outcome. Few ICU physicians systematically follow their patients after ICU discharge; although this would be interesting, time constraints mean that once discharged from the ICU, the patient’s course generally progresses unknown to the intensivist except by a chance meeting with the physician-in-charge in the elevator or cafeteria, or perhaps a note of thanks (or complaint) from the patient.
