Obwohl die Bedeutung der Händehygiene schon Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts beschrieben wurde, wird nach wie vor diskutiert, welches die beste Methode der Händehygiene ist. Diese Diskussion schlägt sich nicht zuletzt in einer Reihe unterschiedlicher Leitlinien und Empfehlungen der verschiedenen Länder nieder.
