Zusammenfassung
Städte werden durch eine hohe Konzentration menschlicher Bevölkerung, dichter Bebauung und vielfältiger menschlicher Aktivitäten geprägt. Stadtentwicklung findet ihren räumlichen Ausdruck in Flächenwachstum, baulicher Verdichtung, aber auch in dem Phänomen des „Schrumpfens“. Diese räumlichen Prozesse schließen sich nicht aus, sondern können gleichzeitig stattfinden und stehen auch in Beziehung zueinander. Welche Auswirkungen haben diese Prozesse auf die ökologische Struktur und die Funktionsweisen der Stadt, und in welcher Beziehung stehen sie zu den drei großen Herausforderungen für eine ökologische orientierte Stadtentwicklung – Förderung einer hohen Lebens- und Umweltqualität in der Stadt, Verminderung des Ge- und Verbrauchs natürlicher Ressourcen durch Städte und städtische Anpassung an den Klimawandel?
