Abstract
This chapter is devoted to the algebro-geometric theory of the arithmetic genus of a variety, which has been recently reviewed by Severi {see Severi [35], pp. 42–81} and Zariski {see Zariski [21], Ch. III}, with a complement due to Muhly-Zariski {see Muhly-Zariski [1]}: the following exposition is chiefly modelled on Zariski’s which is the most comprehensive, being applicable to a normal variety over any field k; nevertheless different and sometimes more far-reaching viewpoints of Severi are also referred to in the case where V is defined over the complex field.
