Abstract

The annelids are regarded as the stem group of the arthropods and, together with them, have many organ systems arranged on a segmental pattern. There are three main classess within the phylum: the Polychaeta (bristle worms), the Oligochaeta (earthworms and related forms) and the Hirudinea (leeches), the latter two being comparatively closely related and, in some classifications, placed together as the Clitellata. The two minor classes, the Archiannelida (see Martin 1978) and the Myzostomida, are not dealt with in detail in this contribution. There are at least 10,000 species of annelids, distributed from arctic seas to the tropics. They exhibit extensive radiation in that there are marine, limnic and terrestrial species, they can be errant or pelagic, may burrow or live in tubes, and there are carnivorous, microphagous and ectoparasitic members. Such diversity necessitates numerous physiological and structural specializations which, however, have been studied in only a few selected species (see Dales 1963, Mill 1978 a). The same holds for the integument, where investigations have focussed largely on a few oligochaetes (see Richards 1977 a, 1978, Jamieson 1981).
