Abstract
Before modeling any disease it is crucial to understand the epidemiological features of the disease. The first four sections of this chapter present epidemiological information on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) including transmission mechanisms, data, and historical, biological and clinical aspects. The last three sections discuss not only advantages and disadvantages of various approaches to modeling HIV/AIDS, but also the purposes and limitations of epidemiological modeling.
