Abstract
Although the concept of automated disease prediction is ancient, only recently have serious attempts been made to provide doctors who treat acute disease with some form of computer-aided decision-support system. In part this has been due to an over-simplification of the term “computer-aided diagnosis” — for in recent years it has been realised that computer-aided systems may support clinical decision-making in acute medicine in a wide variety of ways.
