Abstract

In the generally accepted sense of the term, vitamins are complex organic chemicals which are essential for the normal functioning of the metabolic processes of an animal and have to be supplied in the diet. Some micro-organisms, bacteria, fungi and algae, also depend on an external supply of such compounds which, in this context, are termed growth factors. Many other micro-organisms and all higher plants are, on the other hand, entirely independent of an external source of vitamins. These organisms utilize vitamins in their metabolism but they have evolved the necessary enzymic apparatus for the synthesis of all necessary growth factors.
