Epidemiology of Schizophrenia: Discussion

  • Conference paper
Search for the Causes of Schizophrenia

Abstract

It is a pleasure and a privilege to discuss the stimulating and instructive papers by Drs. Jablensky, Eaton, Van Os, and Häfner on epidemiological research. The purpose of the papers by Drs. Jablensky and Eaton is to sift the results of epidemiological studies for clues to the etiology of schizophrenia. This involved assessments of the firmness of the evidence and analyses of what it shows and fails to show. The presentations by Drs. Van Os and Häfner had somewhat different agendas: Van Os, to argue for a dimensional approach that would locate schizophrenia within larger continua of psychosis, mania, negative symptoms and depression; Häfner, to portray the natural history of the disorder.
