Zusammenfassung

Nach Angaben des Statistischen Bundesamtes versterben jährlich in Deutschland ca. 4000 Kinder und Jugendliche bis zum 18. Lebensjahr. Ungefähr 60 % dieser Todesfälle ereignen sich im 1. Lebensjahr, davon zwei Drittel in der Neonatalzeit. Somit stellen Neugeborene die größte Gruppe innerhalb aller Todesfälle im Kindes- und Jugendalter dar. In diesem Kapitel werden allgemeine Grundlagen (Definitionen, Epidemiologie etc.) und Besonderheiten einer palliativmedizinischen Betreuung im Kontext der (Peri-)Neonatologie vermittelt. So werden grundlegende Aspekte sowohl der prä- als auch der unmittelbar peri- und postnatalen Betreuung von Kindern mit lebensbedrohlichen Erkrankungen und deren Eltern dargestellt (z. B. pränatale Beratung betroffener Paare, Palliativversorgung im Kreißsaal, Erstellung eines postnatalen Palliativplans usw.).
