Abstract
A short survey on the history of Fracture Mechanics is presented, supplemented by some remarks. Subsequently, the thoughts on fracture of two early scientists who are not widely known in the fracture mechanics community are discussed in more detail. Bertram Hopkinson had a clear picture of the stresses ahead of a crack and motivated most probably C.E. Inglis to solve the elliptical-hole problem. Ludwig Prandtl was the first to use the cohesive zone model and who investigated a time dependent fracture problem.
