Abstract

Toxoplasma gondii is an apicomplexan parasite that can cause toxoplasmosis, a widespread infection, with clinical spectrum ranging from a completely asymptomatic infection to multiorgan involvement. Novel medicines effective against both active and latent forms of the parasite are greatly needed. To review current evidence for antitoxoplasmosis by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), our literature focused on five kinds of Chinese herbs, including Torilis japonica, Zingiber officinale, Sophora flavescens, Astragalus membranaceus, and Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGI in our present study, which are used in TCM for the treatment of allergic inflammatory diseases, infectious diseases such as bacterial infection, virus infection, helminthiasis, etc., and the mentioned TCM whose antiapicomplexan activity have been previously reported. In conclusion, TCM possess promising activity in vivo and in vitro against T. gondii, and the components of TCM deserve further study.
