Abstract

This volume brings together contributions of genomics to the study of soil fungi and plant-interacting fungi. Fungal genome projects are now far too numerous to cover in a single volume, and the species have been chosen to follow several routes through this expanding field of research: from model species for genetics like Neurospora crassa and Aspergillus nidulans to model pathogens and from soil fungi to plant-interacting fungi to some plant pathogens that are not primarily residents of the soil. In parallel, we have attempted to bring a variety of technologies: genetics, transcriptomics, biochemistry, and, of course, genomics. This chapter thus provides an overview that will help the reader to link the species that are included with the extensive research on species that are not discussed here. We briefly summarize with some directions which future research is likely to take. The final chapter on methodology will be a convenient reference source for some of the experimental basis underlying the conclusions reached in the species-oriented chapters.
