Abstract

Cytologic examinations using fine needle aspiration, exfoliative brushings, and needle core biopsy are essential tests in the diagnosis of esophageal, gastric and pancreatic lesions, staging of malignancy, and follow-up of patients. The sensitivity and specificity of cytology is increased by the concurrent use of radiologic imaging (endoscopic ultrasound, ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging), immunocytochemistry, and molecular studies.
