Pituitary Apoplexy

Abstract

Pituitary apoplexy is one of uncommon but most important disorders of the nervous system, but its optimal management still remains controversial due to lack of randomized controlled trials in the literature. Even today, it is unclear for the majority of patients whether surgical or conservative management provides the best outcome in pituitary apoplexy. In this chapter, a summary of the definition, history, incidence, histopathological findings and pathophysiology of clinical manifestations of pituitary apoplexy was given for neurosurgeons, endocrinologists, neuro-ophthalmologists, neuroradiologists and neuropathologists.
