A high-quality, evidence-based and patient-centered nursing care of patients in the hospital of the future also requires competent nurses and efficient management of the nursing service, which must be aligned in the core to the professional development of nursing care services offered. The growing and complex demands on management of the nursing service will be met at the Robert Bosch Hospital in Stuttgart, with a new management model that includes not only a structural reorganization of the organizational structure, but rather a substantive realignment of nursing management. First, the current management structure and the requirements for future leaders are represented. The process of participatory development approach, involving all stakeholders is described and leads to the detailed presentation of the new management model to its purpose and the new leadership roles. Such a change process reaches deep into the existing identity of the managers of the nursing service and the organization. For this reason, the model also includes discussion of an accompanying qualification program and the necessary communication structures. Finally, lessons learned from developing the concept and initial experience with the implementation are presented.
